Meet Kerrod - an intelligent wood worker who is a perfectionist in his work and loves to have meaningful conversation. Kerrod is also blind and deaf.
DW support workers Geoff and Peter (who are deaf) worked alongside Kerrod's existing support team (from other agencies) to train in his adjusted communication style. The connection Geoff & Peter had straight away was amazing! Geoff found out him and Kerrod went to the same deaf school and knew a lot of the same people.
Support team member, Jenny wanted an innovative way of training support staff that would become a resource for providers while also telling the story of Kerrod’s rich and unique skills and abilities.
Big congratulations to Jenny for 'thinking outside the box' and to the existing support staff that took the time to be involved with this project
In this video, his family and friends show how they communicate. It's pretty obvious how much they treasure Kerrod's friendship and being a part of the rich life he lives!
Sandra the adventurer was at it again - on an adventure – with a day trip to Gatton. She lived there many years ago and it was the first time Sandra has been back.
Sandra showed her support worker, Bree, the sights and all the places Sandra remembered and where she used to live. They had a great time down memory lane. Sometimes we take for granted being able to travel to wherever we want. What a great day!
And, as always, how can we miss a chance for a MacDonalds lunch? 😊
Amalina has provided a high quality of support for our participants and is now moving to a new role – Support Coordinator. This role will include connecting DW participants with allied health professionals, service providers and with any services to enhance and assist our participants to achieve their NDIS goals.
Amalina was a school teacher and came from Malaysia to Australia for further study. During this time, she fell in love with Australia and decided to call it home. She is mother to 2 beautiful girls and wife to an understanding, supportive and charming husband.
Her favourite place to be is outdoors appreciating nature – bush walking, hiking, cycling with her family and picnics in the park. Even in the rain, Amalina enjoys being outside dancing in the wet backyard with her daughters!
As a school teacher, Amalina always had a soft spot for people with disabilities (not that teachers ever have favourites! 😊 ) and dreamt of living in an inclusive society. 2020 has seen her find a role fulfilling this dream and helping others realise their dreams and making them happy.
We truly enjoy Amalina’s heart for others and her adventurous spirit and it’s wonderful to have her in this coordinator role on the DW team!
We are privileged to have Jason’s creativity and passion for thinking out of the box when it comes to supporting DW participants. He has always encouraged the team with inventive ideas for participants, so we are formalising and recognising this contribution by appointing Jason in the role of Activity Coordinator.
He has always held a passion to see people grow and thrive. There is no one better suited to this role with his innovative ideas for activities, training, and coaching, along with many community connections and extensive experience.
In his spare time, Jason doesn’t seem to stop moving! An enthusiastic muso, he plays guitar and writes songs. His own personal goal is to continually work on keeping an open-mind so his heart is always soft. His fitness regime is the very physically intense Muay Thai fighting. Jason also keeps his heart soft and his mind grounded by volunteering for Rosie’s friends on the street.
Watch this space - Jason has already been planning some incredible training......more details soon!!
“I love it when a plan comes together!”
A huge shout out to Pure Hair Toowoomba for leading the way in local businesses diversifying and enriching their workplace! Hannah is deaf and her first language is Auslan. Pure Hair has employed Hannah in a customer-focussed industry – hairdressing and she is thriving in it!
Pure Hair has 2 exceptional salons at Westridge Shopping Centre and The Ridge Shopping World.
Hannah’s qualities of fearlessness, enthusiasm and initiative grabbed the attention of owner, Taren. Her and salon manager, Michelle are thrilled for the tenacious and enthusiastic addition to their team! As part of Hannah’s transition into DW’s support worker, Ashlee has been interpreting for Hannah and interpreting for her with her new colleagues and clients with any adjustments that arise. Taren has both welcomed the support and enjoyed the extra communication in the salon.
We are also delighted for the team at Pure Hair who will be extending their multi-lingual skills with DW Auslan lessons to increase effectiveness of their communication with Hannah.
In addition to Ashlee’s services during Hannah’s time in the salon, the DW team is also supporting Hannah in her new position with off-site support in her training workbooks. Since English is Hannah’s second language, our team gives her learning support.
What a team! What a girl! Hannah - we are so excited to be supporting your employment and training journey and thrilled to be able to play a part in everyone expanding their linguistic skills through this experience!

Joshua’s culinary skills have come a long way from learning cheese on toast! Last weekend, Joshua and his support worker Jason did a master chef day.
Joshua made a three-layered cake with strawberry cream and white chocolate sauce in middle, choc fudge chocolate cake, strawberry coulis served with chocolate coated strawberries!
Great teamwork and such great fun! …so where’s our piece, guys? 😊
We welcome Delia as our new Coordinator for the South Burnett area. As the need for our support packages has grown in this region, we are so excited and grateful to enrich our team with Delia! With extensive experience in the disability sector, she also holds a fantastic reputation in both the Kingaroy community and local disability sector.
It is also worth the mention that some of us have had the privilege of sampling her delicious cooking – perhaps not essential to her role in the team, but very much appreciated nonetheless! 😊
We do still have support available for more participants in the South Burnett area - if you have an NDIS package and would like our specialised and individualised support packages, email email@example.com and we’ll put you in contact with Delia – she’d love to chat with you!
